Fashion Meets Finance: Day and Night

Working at an IB internship this summer, I find myself having to wear a different set of clothes from the one I usually wear on a day-to-day basis. Oftentimes, abiding the dress code means not having a lot of flexibility in apparel options.

But that doesn’t mean that you can’t look great with what you already have…

Is it possible to transform your outfit from business casual to simply casual in minutes?

If you often find yourself hastily changing clothes between your work and social lives, then you will be glad to know that there are ways to make the wardrobe switches more convenient.

I recently discovered this Banana Republic dress shirt in store, wondering whether I can wear it in different situations. Although the outfit isn’t glamorous, it is very work friendly and professional. The dress shirt is a practical and convenient choice for everyday work wear.

Here, I am wearing what seems like your typical dress shirt for work…

“Day (and me trying to pull of being au naturel with this pose).”

… And here I am wearing the same shirt but ready to hang out with my friends! Who knew that this dress shirt was not as it seemed when it’s not tucked in (me, that’s who)?

If you saw this dress shirt as its original design, I bet that you might not consider buying it for your finance internship, or any other internship for that matter. But with red lipstick, leather shorts, and accessories, the looks transforms into a casual and glamorous outfit to wear at night! Lesson of the day: It’s these little tweaks that make big differences.

I never knew how self-empowering red lipstick can make a woman feel until now (thanks Danielle for the tip!). The bright red color just adds a ka-pow to my dark black and blue ensemble!

I could be dozing off and you wouldn’t know.

If there is room in your bag, you can bring a change in bottoms, like I did. That’s when shorts come into the rescue because they are just as compact as your back-up shoes.

Also, remember the COACH bag that can be worn in two ways? Well, I was wrong. As you can see, it can be worn in three! Tuck the straps inside and you got yourself a convertible handbag for evening dates.

And another shot of the same outfit… I really just wanted to pose next to the flowers.

As a final everyday piece of advice, I definitely encourage you to be creative and resourceful with their wardrobe. Treating them like reusable assets will save you money and time.

Classic pieces are the best investment. For work, a cream-colored soft draping top with short sleeves, navy skirt (no more black, please!) with matching blazer (with a good cut for your figure- generally past the waist but not to the hip-think courtroom attorney wear), classic navy pumps with a 1″ heel and simple handbag to carry your electronics (iPhone, iPad, whatever, wallet, keys, notebook, lipstick, cologne). For the weekends you can never go wrong with blue jeans and a good cable-knit sweater, add a neck piece, such as a scarf or necklace, and hoop earrings. Then, you are good to go wherever your fate takes you 🙂
